The job search industry lead by Monster and the other big job boards has not kept pace with the way candidates and hiring managers connect in today's job marketplace. These shortcomings shouldn't be your loss.
I have some good experience in the employment field. I worked for CareerBuilder* as a senior product manager, and Microsoft as a hiring manager. And, while unemployed in Portland, Oregon during the dot com bust and after 911, I became a headhunter. My partner and used commonplace marketing methods and helped hundreds of out of work employees land new jobs in that tough employment period.
Looking back, i realized that there are ways to get employed that you will never hear about from the large job boards like Monster. Even while so many out of work Americans were hurting, you'd never hear that answering job ads is pretty much the worst way, statistically, to land a job. Yet, the big job boards would have you coming back to their sites day-after-day to plow through open listings and apply to jobs. A little bit more on this later.
That's one reason I started this site. I'm just a small operations, and i'm not in competition with the big job boards, but I do know how to use commonplace marketing techniques to accelerate your job search, get you considered for jobs that are never advertised, have employers and recruiters searching for and calling you for a change, and to land a a better job, all while being on the job market for less time. And, you can do this on a small budget anywhere from $0.00 to $150 or so.
This kind of information won't make the big job boards a lot of money, but then again, their shortcomings shouldn't be your loss.
Why You Should Listen To Me?
- I have hiring manager experience at Microsoft, arguably one of the toughest places to get hired on earth. Also, I was hired there in the middle of the dot com bust and after 911. My methods do work.
- I know how the Internet career market works. While working at CareerBuilder*, I created online products and services for job seekers to connect with hiring managers, and for 100 of the nation's top newspapers to publish their ads.
- I've hired hundreds of employees, interviewed thousands of candidates, and reviewed tens-of-thousands of resumes.
- During the dot com bust, especially after 911, the hiring environment was probably the toughest it had been since the Great Depression. My partner and I helped hundreds of people get hired.
- You don't have to pay me. I'm not trying to sell you anything. My career goal in life is to help other get opportunities.
Why I Created This Site
An Inefficient Job Search Hurts You
and Helps Monster.com and Other Big Job Boards
A sad fact about the 'job search' industry today is that it thrives when candidates are inefficient at getting themselves hired.
The biggest money maker in the job search industry is advertised jobs, but did you know that each advertised job gets an average of more than 600 resumes. And, less than 5% of all jobs are filled through advertising. And, that career sites like Monster, CareerBuilder, and others show job seekers less than 1% of current job available today! If you are relying on advertised jobs to get hired, you are conducting an inefficient job search.
The big job search boards don't encourage job seekers to utilize the best methods for finding work, in fact, they would have you believe visiting their sites everyday to search for and apply to jobs one at a time is the best method for finding work. In fact, it is the best method form them to make money from employers who advertise jobs. What the job boards would have you do is actually the most inefficient way for you to look for work, yet it is the way they make the most money.
You Won't Hear This Advice On Monster.com
The best tools available for job seekers are not available to them from the the big job boards. You won't hear advice on Monster that encourages you to post your resume on their site and then go to CareerBuilder, HotJos and others. You won't hear that the jobs you search for on their site are but a very small fraction of all the available jobs on the market, so you are better off searching for jobs elsewhere. You won't hear that one reason advertised jobs are hard to land is because they are competed for the most. You won't hear that most jobs go unadvertised and Monster does little if anything to help you find and land those jobs.
I hope you can see that what's good for Monster, CareerBuilder and the other large career sites may not be in your best interest.
How-To Close The Gap
Hiring managers want to find you, but when the average advertised job fetches more than 600 resumes, it's hard for you to stand out in that crowd. It's also hard for hiring managers to effectively review all of those resumes.
To overcome the shortcomings of the 'job search' industry and bridge the gap between you and the hiring managers that want to hire you, you can use a variety of tools available today to market your resume and yourself. When you know how to be where the hiring managers are looking for you, and you get the right exposure for your resume, you will start to get interviews within one week.
How I Get Paid
I don't charge for this site. I have a few advertisements, and for some of the recommended services that offer an affiliate program, I get a small percentage of a sale. However, I offer no service on this site that isn't best of breed, regardless of weather I get paid for it or not. The advertisement dollars can add up, so if you like this site, please recommend it to somebody, or write about it in your blog. And, you can always donate, if you've benefited from the information here and want to help out.
